Born a dirt poor coal minors daughter living with her parents and her brothers and sisters in a one bed room house Loretta Lynn grew to one of if not thee biggest country star in the world.
Loretta Lynn grew up in Butcher Hollow, KY a coal mining town, she got her start like many other singers, singing in her church choir, and at the age of 13 she married Oliver Lynn.
She wasn’t discovered so much as she worked her ass off to get noticed and her and her husband worked hard to promote her as a solo singer. Early in her career she had a very classic country / honky tonk sound. But as the years progressed she developed a very recognizable sound all her own. (A fantastic sound if you ask me, which you are.)
Her songs have a very autobiographical style especially her song coal minor’s daughter, which tells the story of her life growing up in Butcher Hollow. That is what makes the woman so wonderful is how personal and soulful her songs are, and the wide rang and style they come in, from the ones where you are slow dancing with your baby in a dimly lit bar, to the crazily up tempo songs where you can swing your partner round and round.
But what ever you do folks don’t right this lady off as some old has been or old timey singer. She is still turning out music today and is still popping into the top ten when she comes out with new material.
Her latest album came out in 2004 and was a collaboration with Jack White of the White Stripes mixing Jack Whites new rock sound with Loretta Lynn’s powerful and recognizable voice. I would have to say that Van Lear Rose is one of the best albums to come out in recent years.
So I suggest to you that you toss all your misconceptions about country aside and pick yourself up some Loretta Lynn.
