Skyline College baseball continued its hot start with another series sweep over the weekend, this time against Solano College, giving the Trojans six consecutive wins. The biggest strength this series was its offense with the Trojans scoring a total of 26 runs.

Skyline sophomore centerfielder Brayden Smith, who hit his first home run of the season in the first game of the series, said he felt good overall about the milestone but emphasized the team’s performance.

“I feel like our team did really well today putting together ABs and just booking off of each other and staying through it through 9 and yeah we’re looking good as a team,” Smith said.

Smith also mentioned the team chemistry has begun to grow over the course of the season.

“Our team chemistry is just getting closer and closer and I feel like we really have a really good group of guys and bible studies on certain days too,” Smith said.

Skyline freshman utility player Derek Waldvogel, said the team’s overall performance was a great way to build off of the team’s last series sweep.

“Today was really good coming off a sweep against Shasta. Everything was clicking. We were hitting balls hard playing good defense and our pitchers did a very good job getting ahead early,” Waldvogel said.

Waldvogel also hit his first home run of the season in the first game, sharing his excitement about the milestone.

“It felt good it actually was my first at bat for Skyline this year so it felt good to kind of trust the foundation let the cheers follow you and too put a good swing on it you know it’s a good thing it went over the fence,” Waldvogel said.

The Trojans success this season is not surprising by any standards as they have been Coast-North Conference champions the past two years. However, the team’s focus is set on turning the page and looking ahead.

Skyline head coach Tony Brunicardi said this year’s group has to make a name for themselves rather than think about what it’s done in the past.

“We don’t even look at it like that every team is its own story, its own journey, there’s new guys, there’s new people so we’re writing our new chapter to the Skyline College Baseball program,” Brunicardi said.

For the Trojans to build upon their early dominance, Brunicardi said the squad will have to play to their strengths.

“For us it’s our versatility. We got a lot of guys who could do a lot of different things. If we can come together as a group and play to our strengths we’re just gonna be just fine,” Brunicardi said.

Skyline will play its next series at home against Marin College in a three-game set this week, however rain may affect the schedule.
