Badminton season comes to a close

Skyline’s badminton team made a good showing in the State Championship meet, held May 7 to 9 in Fresno, with two players on the women’s team placing in the semi-finals.

Badminton Coach Jan Fosberg was pleased with the team’s performance.

“The team did a great job in competition,” she said.

This meet was what the team had been planning for all year. They worked hard through many hours of practice – holding drills, rehearsing strategy, practicing shot skills and learning new footwork. The team members also met regularly to study their opponents’ skills and weaknesses.

The Trojans entered the tournament as a fifth seed competitor. Of Skyline’s team members, Rachel Lum and MJ Phan finished as semi-finalists in women’s doubles. In addition Phan also finished as consolation bracket winner in women’s singles.

The tournament was Skyline’s second this year, following up on the success of March’s Coast Conference Tournament matches. This was also the second year in a row of recognition for standout player Phan, who won the Coast Conference All-Conference Award last year.

This was a great end to the season for the Skyline badminton team. It validated all the team’s experience and confidence, giving them the boost they need heading into next year’s play.

“The experience will make our returning players stronger and more prepared,” Fosberg said.

As a fun team outing to complete the season, the squad departed from the Fresno tournament and made a trip to Disneyland.
