Life can get in the way of our goals, especially in terms of college. Many people face difficulties in their return, while others share nothing but positive experiences.
Nearly 44 percent of students enrolled at Skyline are over the age of 23, and are considered, “returning college students;” those that have taken at least three consecutive semesters off in-between enrollment.
Skyline alumna Linda Fried encountered her fair share of difficulties in her return after a near 10-year hiatus. The mom of two struggled to find a balance between her personal life and schoolwork, yet returned in the hopes it would yield a greater reward.
“It’s not easy, especially when you see students who are younger than you, experiencing different things, who you feel you can’t identify with; however once you get over that, it’s only good things from there,” Fried said.
There has been an increase of students over the age of 23, who have re-enrolled over the past five years. With the market of people competing for jobs getting larger, most find ways to up the anti and increase their chances for a greater financial reward.
Skyline student Olga Novak took a break in her coursework prior to her return. Getting back into the routine of school work is not without its difficulties.
“The two hardest aspects of returning to college after taking a break, are integrating back into the community, and maintaining the patience of schoolwork,” Novak said.
Many students who have faced re-entry describe their struggle in coping with the lost time, and the challenges that go along with their return.
Skyline student Scott Keating recalled the break he took in between his return. Keating had to leave initially due to his financial and family problems.
“You have to put the past behind you, and focus on the positive, which is creating a new future for yourself,” Keating said.
While the return may seem to be a daunting task, there are many positive experiences to be had, exciting coursework to be learned, and fond memories to be made at Skyline. When asked what advice should be given to those who plan to return Olga Novak had this to say.
“Make time for yourself to just be, make time to get everything done, and you’ll be glad in the end that you did it, “said Novak.
