The shooting that occurred at Skyline College on September 2nd, was a shocking event that caused many students and parents to wonder about how safe is the college is. Skyline has been a pretty safe place, and maybe this is the reason so many people could not believe that a shooting happened. Unfortunately things like that always happen all over the country, we just never think it can happen to us, on our school. That was the reaction of some of the students. On the day of the shooting, text messages were sent to the students who had signed up for the service. Some did not get the messages. An email was sent, as well, informing about the shooting, and claiming that there was going to be increased security on campus. Although, on the day after the shooting and the days that followed, not a lot of security was seen, at least not more than usual. Why would it be important for Skyline to actually do what they said? Some students say that even with the shooting they still feel safe on campus or their feelings haven’t changed. Some of the parents – specially the younger student’s parents- , though, are actually really worried about their children’s safety, and on the Friday after the shooting a lot of students were absent, maybe because of their parents that. Counseling is being offered at Skyline, which is a good thing because it might even calm some parents down, since students can get the help and support they need, if they felt shocked due to the chaotic event. Even though we have not been seeing any additional security measures around campus, we have to give credit to everyone who took care of all the students that were on campus on that unforgettable Wednesday. No one else got hurt, students got appropriately escorted off the Skyline campus, and we appreciate that very much. But unfortunately, all the good work did not continued on the days after. One or two security guards are not going to calm anyone down. We are hoping we can have some peace and feel safe, not having to guess if a student is carrying a gun, if we are going to be protected if it happens again…For now, that is all we can do : hope.
