The View From Here

I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t need that vacation.

I think we all did to one degree or another, of course. And I don’t mean to sound like one of those woe-is-me types, but there’s only so much work one person can handle before they’d kill for a few days of not having to think about anything.

But enough of my bawling. Those of you who picked up the paper last week no doubt noticed that things weren’t what they were supposed to be. Well, I did explain it in an apologetic letter in that issue, but I can reiterate here.

We’ve always had problems with deadlines. Procrastination, ignoring them altogether, that sort of thing. But the problem came to a head when I tried to enforce strict deadlines so that we had a chance of getting things done in a timely fashion.

Long story short, and without naming names, I had no choice but to back up what I’d said and cut almost eight pages of content from the paper.

It sucked to do, but I think it was the right decision. Without actually enforcing the policies I’d laid down, nothing would change. And if I have to put out a humiliating issue or two to give people the kick in the ass they need to get motivated, so be it.

Hopefully, it’ll work out as well as I’m hoping in the end. For now, only time will tell.
