On Saturday, March 7th, 2009, the Skyline College Lady Trojans basketball team’s exciting season came to an end. The Lady Trojans played the number-one ranked City College of San Francisco Rams in a game that would decide who would go to the Elite Eight tournament for the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association. The Lady Trojans ended up losing the game, 59-70. Although the Lady Trojans lost the game, and the season is now over, it was still one to remember.
The Lady Trojans started their season off with a very hard loss to Butte College, 71-68. They quickly got back on track, winning four games in a row beating schools like American River, Redwoods, College of Marin, and Ohlone College. After a hard loss to Santa Rosa Community College, the Lady Trojans got back on track to their winning ways, winning 11 games in a row, pushing their record to 15-2. After many close games that the Lady Trojans won and lost, they ended their season with a 23-6 record, becoming the number 9 ranked team in the Northern California conference and going into the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Their first playoff game was on Feb. 27. The team traveled five hours up north where they were getting ready to play against the number 8 ranked Lassen College in Susanville, CA. During this game, the Lady Trojans dominated Lassen College for almost the entire game. They ended up winning 60-48. After the great win versus Lassen, the Lady Trojans had one thing on their mind, City College of San Francisco Lady Rams. The Lady Rams beat the Lady Trojans both games that they played, and the lady Trojans were ready for revenge. “Thirds time the charm,” said Laura Zasly, guard for the Lady Trojans. The Lady Trojans were ready to go to San Francisco, and get the win from The Rams. The game against the Lady Rams was one of the best games that the Lady Trojans have played this season. A lot of shots were made by both teams. The lady Trojans played hard ball the entire game. At one point the lady Trojans were down by 10 points. They then started an 8-2 run and were down by only 2 points. The lady rams then got on their flow which they had the entire season and started scoring more points. With a mixed crowed cheering and booing for both the Lady Trojans and the Lady Rams, the home team had the advantage. After 40 minutes of playing hard basketball, the Lady Trojans lost to the Lady Rams, and saw their season come to an end. “I’m sad that it’s over,” said Coach Trisha Hosley, “We got one step closer this year compared to last year and hopefully we’ll get another step closer next season.”
