A Skyline student was arrested in San Bruno on January 27 and charged with grand theft robbery because of evidence obtained from campus surveillance cameras.
Skyline College’s Alan Caicedo of San Bruno was arrested on campus and arraigned with suspicions of stealing another student’s backpack which included a laptop and school books according to the San Bruno Police Department.
On January 26th a Skyline College student went to the campus bookstore, sat his backpack down at the front counter and went to purchase items for school. When he returned to the front counter his bag was gone.
The victim then went to the campus security where they reviewed the school’s surveillance camera during the time period that the student was there.
After 15 minuets of watching videos from both the school bookstore and campus surveillance cameras, Michael Celeste, Chief of Public Safety, saw who the person was that stole that bag.
Celeste then sent the video over to the San Bruno Police Department where they later identified the person as Caicedo.
The school’s surveillance camera, which has been up and running for about 3 weeks now resulted in helping this skyline student find who took hi backpack.
“There is an advantage to students that we have a video system” Celeste said “We are now able to go and retrieve video footage and hopefully catch an individual doing something wrong.”
Is this really going to help make Skyline College safe? Some students agree
“I guess I like the surveillance cameras.” Health and Science major student Angelica Castellanos said. “It’s a good thing when you’re able to catch someone doing something wrong in the act.”
While some students like Angelica may agree with the new surveillance cameras, others have different views on this.
“I don’t do any sort of criminal activities, so I don’t really care” said Simone Francese, Sociology major
She later added “I was not aware that there were new cameras around campus. If you are going to do that, then you [the school] should inform the students of this.”
While these new cameras have caught some actions like the January 26th incident, there are still some things that are not being caught.
According to Public Information Officer Caroline Ocampo, there was an incident in the school’s library a few weeks ago where another Skyline Student bag came up missing which had a laptop, and school books inside of it.
