If you’re a skyline student who parks in lot 5,6, or 11, you’ve probably noticed a variety of construction equipment stored in the dirt parking lot (staff lot 10) while walking north towards building five primarily, or if you’re walking east from lot 11 in the direction of building three. But what you may not know is a new construction project involving student safety and accessibility friendly routes for handicap students. As it turns out the Hensel Phelps Construction took over that dirt lot for their construction trailers, containers, equipment, and materials location”.
The new project is anticipated to get underway shortly and has a budget so far of $250,000. Ed Westland, a construction manager at Skyline Swinerton Management mentioned the student safety issue is a top priority. As the construction process unfolds, the application for design deadline is April 20, and sufficient funding for the project should not be a problem. The completed project will also aid handicapped students, making it accessible for them to reach building three without any major obstacles in their way. Linda Van Sciver, a DSPS counselor, said that prior to starting construction, they must first ok it with DSPS. Also part of the project is to maintain the dirt and gravel area in the vicinity of building three and the portables including “cleaning up” the gravel and paving ,which goes back to student safety.
