Vampires, blood, murder, sex, love, violence, and the Deep South. This might not sound like a hit show on HBO, but think again. “True Blood” is the newest show to cause a stir on HBO. It isn’t Buffy the Vampire, it’s a more unique, and refreshing take on the latest gothic craze: vampires.
Set in Louisiana, in a parish called Bon Temps, the show’s premise is about vampires living “normal” lives among humans, and humans accepting vampires as people. The characters have deep southern accents, and live relatively simple lives which, according to some that live there, are being complicated by the vampires.
The show is called “True Blood” because it is based on vampires being able to live somewhat “normal” lives. Thanks to Japanese scientists creating a synthetic blood that nourishes the vampires, they no longer have to feed off of humans. In “True Blood”, the blood-sucking and blood-addicted does not apply solely to vampires. In fact, some humans are equally addicted to “V”, or vampire blood. It puts humans on a supernatural high. V is highly powerful and addicting. In one episode, a girl addicted to V put one single drop of blood on an aspirin (so that the blood doesn’t clot and the high is more intense). V takes people to a different world where everything is light and fun. If two people do V together, they may interact in that world together also. In order to get V, some people have killed vampires and drained their blood, or simply negotiated with them. All of which, is against the law.
The shows focus is on a core group of Bon Temp residents: Sookie, Sam, Jason, Tara, Bill (side bar). Their lives and struggles keep the show interesting and refreshing. This show is something that hasn’t been done before in such a thoughtful way. This complex and intricately detailed storyline has many people who don’t usually like supernatural shows, fascinated by “True Blood”. Give “True Blood” a chance and I promise, you will definitely sink your teeth into it.
