“Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” offers everything you’d expect in a Star Wars game and more.
“The Force Unleashed” is Lucas Art’s newest addition to the Star Wars continuity. The story takes place between episodes three and four. In the game you play as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice and it is your mission to destroy the remaining Jedi throughout the galaxy. However, because no one can know of your existence, it is also your mission to kill anyone and everyone in your path.
As the name suggests, the game includes massive force abilities. In fact, this was my favorite thing about playing it. You can use mostly all of your surroundings to your advantage. Whether it’s force grabbing objects around you and smashing them into enemies, or just grabbing the enemies and launching them, there are countless means of obliterating your enemy.
When you aren’t using the force you are equipped with a light saber. The combo system is like most other games, alternating between attack buttons to perform various combos. It’s very reminiscent to the combo system in “God of War.” Certain combos can fuse with the force to do even more damage.
With an added RPG element you can constantly evolve your character. The three skill trees, force power, force combo, and force talent offer a customized experience of play. You gain experience by killing enemies and finding Jedi holocrons (basically hidden treasures) which level you up and award you a skill point in each area.
You also gain individual skill points known as force spheres by varying your abilities and combos. Force spheres earned this way will be for a specific sphere tree but will help as you advance through the game and your abilities start to consume more force spheres.
Force Unleashed is available on all major platforms. Personally, I choose to get it on the PlayStation 3. With long loading times I figured the ability to make the game faster by downloading some of it to the PS3 would come in handy. I also thought it looked a little better on the PlayStation.
I’ve heard the version on the Wii is a little bit of a different game. I’m not sure exactly what the difference is but with the ability to use the Wii remote as a lightsaber, how can you go wrong?
If you’re a Star Wars fan then Force Unleashed is a must have. The game play is great and I loved the story. With a few bonus cameos, this is a great new chapter of the saga.
