A year ago a daily parking permit cost a dollar, but since the Spring ’08 semester parking costs have risen dramatically to two dollars. We at the Skyline View don’t believe it should rise this much despite the reasons offered by school administrators.
Currently the school is undergoing budget difficulties because the parking fund has acquired a deficit. Due to this the school has to make the money up somewhere, and they are currently taking money from the general fund to maintain the current parking lots.
There are several problems students find with the cost increase, but one major concern is the lack of parking. In the future this problem will be solved because there will be more slots. Right now buying a parking permit will save you money, but it will not guarantee you any kind of decent slot. Students may want to park near building eight, but they will likely end up parking up the hill in lot two. Students also don’t like trying to find two dollars in quarters to pay for the daily permit.
Other schools pay less for parking but this is possibly due to their more sound financial situations. For example at Diablo Valley College students pay only twenty dollars for a semester permit and 50 cents for a day pass.
While we don’t really approve of fee increase we have a suggestion for how to lower your parking fees all the way to zero; drive a motorcycle. Motorcycles don’t have to pay for parking. So if you’re a Hell’s Angel at Skyline College, you don’t have to pay for parking. But then again, Hell’s Angels don’t have to pay for anything.
