Growing up I was never really a fan of the Speed Racer cartoon. Even when I heard the Wachowski brothers, creators of the Matrix trilogy, were directing the movie I thought nothing of it. However, after seeing the first trailer for the movie I couldn’t wait for it. I was even more excited when I found out it would be playing in Imax, which is the way I had to see it. Speed Racer was written and directed by the Wachowski brothers and had an amazing cast including Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon, Christina Ricci, and even two awesome monkeys named Kenzie and Willie. I really enjoyed watching these people work together. Even though the movie was only rated G, the cast made it a great fast paced, light hearted, action and comedy experience. Furthermore, even though the rating may have limited the action, every fight scene was comical with plenty of humor to it. As a whole the script is written very well. Some of the character introductions can be a little confusing, but everything ties together by the end of the movie. Still, throughout the entire movie there is plenty of humor that just fits and the cast pulls it off so well. The dialogue is consistently great. I’ll admit there were some times when there was just way too much going on in one scene to focus. There were also times that I was overwhelmed by some of the special effects. However, the Wachowski brothers did a great job using those special effects to combine reality with the realm of cartoon. Every scene was full of color. The backgrounds were incredible and dynamic. Every environment from the raceways to the metropolitan cities had a wide range of bright colors giving it a very cartoonish feel. Most impressive were the costumes that the cast wore. Above all else in the movie they had the greatest impact on making the movie feel like a combination of reality and cartoon. This movie may not be for everyone but I really enjoyed it. I recommend if you are planning on watching that you see it in the Imax. Personally, I can’t wait for the sequel.
