Q: So how long have you been on staff?
A: This is my second semester on staff; I started last year as a copy editor and staff writer. This semester I felt like I needed a new challenge and I wanted to learn more so I ran for managing editor, and now I am the staff managing/copy editor!
Q: What made you decide to get into journalism?
A: I took Journalism in high school but it wasn’t the greatest experience so when I saw it in the course catalog here, I decided to give it one more chance, and I’ve been here ever since!
Q: Have you always enjoyed writing or is it something you’ve just recently gotten into?
A: Writing is my passion. I have loved writing since I was really, really young, I would constantly make up stories and I always wrote them down because I was afraid of forgetting them. I think it comes from my love of reading, my mom taught me to read when I was about three years old.
Q: So you’re our copy editor. Explain what exactly that entails.
A: My job is to read over all of the articles as they come in, after the page editors look at them. I edit for AP style, and other mistakes page editors might have missed such as grammar and spelling, things like that.
Q: What are the ups and downs of having that job?
A: I honestly love my job as a copy editor, but sometimes it can get difficult when I have been reading over quite a few articles. I try to take a break for a couple of minutes so that I can keep my mind energized and get all of the articles copy edited to the best of my ability.
Q: You write a lot of news too, right? What do you like most about news writing?
A: News writing is the most exciting! It is not always good news, but then again it’s not always bad. I like that I have to be curious and search for the information, because I am a curious person by nature. Just being on staff here I have traveled to Sacramento and San Jose for JACC conferences, gone to Oakland for a story, and gotten to become acquainted with a lot of the people who work on campus.
Q: When you’re not slaving away in the newsroom, what do you like to do with your time?
A: Wait, you mean we’re allowed to leave!! What is this? No one told me that!Well when I’m not working in the newsroom I am down for anything. I love going to Giants games, or watching them on TV, and hanging out with my friends. Although I spend a lot of time with my brothers, we always have a lot of fun, especially when Nick, (the younger of my two brothers), and I start being our regular behind the doors selves. We are complete goofs, we laugh more than 90 percent of the time, and Memo is teaching me to play his baseball videogame!
Q: What are your plans after Skyline?
A: I am majoring in Journalism, so I plan on transferring to San Francisco State, and getting involved in their program. From there I hope to get an internship that can lead to a job. This is literally my dream job, I love doing it, and I hope to be able to continue it! Ultimately I would love to travel the world and continue to write stories, both for news and just for myself.
Q: Your brother Michael also writes for our paper. What’s it like having your brother on staff?
A: It’s great having Memo on staff! I love that I get to spend some time with him at school. It’s different from being with him at home, but I really enjoy it. I am very close to both of my brothers so I’m glad to be able to share something I am so passionate about with him.
Well, let’s ask him how he feels.
Q: Michael, what’s it like having your sister on staff?
A: It doesn’t affect me.
Q: How long have you been on staff?
A: I’m a rookie on the staff.
Q: I know you mostly write sports. What do you love most about covering sports?
A: Covering sports I have good knowledge of sports.
Q: What’s your favorite sport, and why do you love it so much?
A: Baseball, I just love. It it’s what I live for.
Q: What do you do with your free time?
A: Video games and play ball.
Q: Where do you hope to be in 10 years?
A: Associated with the MLB.
