When Michelle Branch turned her back on her successful pop career several years ago, many people, including her record label had doubts on whether a country album would garner the same success of her previous solo efforts.
Pairing up as the Wreckers with her former back-up singer and long-time friend, Jessica Harp, proved that it was indeed a wise decision on her part, as their debut album Stand Still, Look Pretty peaked at number four on the U.S. Country charts, and has since been certified gold.
With all the positive attention they have received, it only makes sense that they would want to continue riding the success of Stand Still, Look Pretty by releasing a live CD/DVD package after only one album under their belt.
Way Back Home: Live from New York City was recorded at the Bowery Ballroom in New York and features 13 tracks, 10 of which were off their debut album, including “Leave the Pieces,” “My, Oh My” and “The Good Kind,” among others.
Of these live recordings, little truly deviates from the original studio recordings of the songs; this however, isn’t a bad thing, as they proved that they can sound just as good live as they do in the studio.
One of the three non-album tracks they performed was “Love Me Like That,” a song that originally appears on Branch’s sophomore album, Hotel Paper as a duet with Sheryl Crow. This rendition featured a banjo played by Harp’s fiancé, Jason Mowery giving it a more country-feel than it originally had. The song, which sees Harp taking over Crow’s vocal parts fits perfectly into the Wreckers’ set list.
“Damn That Radio,” another non-album track, is a finger-snapping, up-tempo song co-written by the Redneck Woman herself, Gretchen Wilson. Of all the songs on this CD/DVD combo, this stays truest to country roots, but Harp admits in the interview part of the DVD that it is a song that neither her or Branch would have written on their own.
The Grammy-nominated “Leave the Pieces” is definitely a highlight, as they let the crowd take over and sing part of the chorus to this country-pop hit.
The encore begins with “Stand Still, Look Pretty,” a powerful acoustic ballad led by Branch, in which she sings: “I am slowly falling apart/ I wish you’d take a walk in my shoes for a start/ You might think it’s easy being me/ You just stand still, look pretty.”
Ending their one-hour set is the angst-filled energetic pop-rock song “Rain.” A song that could easily be mistaken as a Branch solo featuring Harp as a back-up singer.
Although Way Back Home: Live from New York does not offer a lot of new material, it is enough to keep fans satisfied until a new record is released. But don’t hold your breath? both Branch and Harp have announced that they will put the Wreckers on hold to pursue their solo careers.
