Skyline may not have a football team, but that doesn’t mean that people don’t play football on campus.Skyline’s flag football class will be offered next semester on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The class was created by Professor Mike Fitzgerald.”I created the class because flag football’s so much fun” said Fitzgerald. The class has almost 30 people in it including one girl, Channa Olson, 21.”It’s [the class] very fun” said Olson. “[It’s] slightly intimidating playing with only guys. It’s definitely something that gets your adrenalin up.”The class is coed, and in the past more girls have signed up. In the class Olson now feels that it doesn’t matter that she’s a girl. “It started out, out of place” said Olson. “I don’t mind talking to them anymore.””[If] whoever’s in the class has the ability to catch the ball then everyone is friendly and supportive” Fitzgerald said.Fitzgerald is the all-time quarter back for the class “that way I make sure everyone gets the ball. They know they’re gonna get the ball. That’s why I quarterback.”Fitzgerald’s favorite thing in the class is when he see’s the students improve so much during class.Olson’s favorite thing about the class is catching the ball. Olson says that how hard the class is depends on how much effort you put into the plays. People like the class enough to come back to Skyline from schools like SF State just to play flag football.Fitzgerald’s favorite anecdote occurred in a huddle where one of the students from SF State said “Coach, can I ask you a question?” “Yeah” Fitzgerald said. “You get paid for this? They like the class so much they continue to keep playing.”Olson herself will be playing again next semester. Her favorite story from the class involved some guy who grabbed her arm illegally. “You’re not allowed to use profanity [in the class], needless to say I sat out for a couple plays” Olson said. “That was the first time and the last” she added hastily.Fitzgerald says, aside from the obvious physical benefits, the student’s attendance is much better on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fitzgerald even went so far in his enthusiasm for the class that he even asked this reporter to join the class next semester. If one wants to join the class hurry up because it fills up very fast, if people from SF State know how fun it is, then everyone else should know too.
