Skyline is proposing an initiative for more security cameras to be placed around campus to help prevent crimes from happening. We here at the Skyline View feel that the prevention of crimes is a very good thing. We think that everyone would not object to loosing some privacy for better security. But we here at the Skyline View hope that they won’t abuse that power.
It’s all well and dandy if Skyline is trying to protect us but as long as they don’t go overboard. We at the Skyline View do not want to feel like every action we take is under constant surveillance, and that any slightest infraction will be monitored and acted upon. To be able to say and do as we feel, within reason of course, should be respected. We are not saying Skyline security will do this but we hope to serve as a petition for the future to not lead to it.
For Skyline the biggest concerns of infractions is burglary, which is on a rise, and motor vehicle theft, according to Skyline security statistics. We at the Skyline View for sure would not like to have our cars stolen, as we our sure many other students feel, so in light of this, why is their still a lack of lighting illumination and cameras in the parking lots?
If we are putting more cameras around campus, shouldn’t we have more in the parking lots, it only makes sense. To persuade people from grand theft auto we should put the parking lots under constant surveillance. But to do so we need to be able to see what is going on. As we our sure that many night students know, in parking lots 2,5,6,7 and 11 there is a serious lack of lighting, which is even more noticeable when it’s foggy (at skyline that’s about half the time). It would be very beneficial if this could happen.
We are sure that many people have heard rumors of assaults happening in the parking lots at night and if there were cameras placed there, this would certainly help in that prevention as well. Whether or not the rumors are true, there is something very unnerving walking back to your car in a deserted parking lot late at night. These measures would help the mental well being of the students here as well as the physical.
We at the Skyline View appreciate the efforts being put forth by the security here at Skyline and understand that it is a difficult and slow process. We only hope that our suggestions will be heeded and eventually implemented.
