Got a few extra bucks and need something to spend it on? This year Skyline is participating in the Toys for Tots toy drive for the first time. By donating a toy on campus or cash donations at toysfortots2007.com your extra cash can help to make a huge difference in a child’s life. In 1947 Diane Hendricks handmade Raggedy Anne dolls to be given to less fortunate children for Christmas. With no means of delivering all the toys herself she left it to her husband, Marine Colonel William L. Hendricks, to find a way to spread these toys. With the help of other Marine reservist in the Los Angeles area Hendricks was able to get the toys out. The next year the Marine Corp adopted Toys for Tots and made it national. “I think it’s good for the kids, it gives them hope to have something,” says Skyline student Marquice Stansberry. 2007 marks Toys for Tots 60 anniversary and with the help of the people the corporation continues to be a success. Skyline has two drop off locations, buildings Two and Six. In fact, Skyline’s contact at Toys for Tots said that we are the only bay area college to participate in this program. “It’s a good thing cause toys make kids happy,” says Brinly Garcia. The drive was advertised with flyers around campus and kicked off here at Skyline the first week of November. The general donations asked for should be toys meant for kids around ages one to 14. Big ticket items donated, such as your Wii’s, PS3’s and X Box’s will be sent to organizations and shelters across the country so multiple kids can make use of them. Both bins have each been filled one time but it’s up to us to continue its success. “Being a kid and not getting a present like everybody else can be heartbreaking,” says Professor Christine Case. “Give them a special [toy] a kid can hold on to.”
