Pain. Suffering. Angst. Abandonment. Orphaned. Rape. Poverty. Death. All of these words describe the HIV/AIDS pandemic currently growing in South Africa today. Too many people do not know about this tragedy, and the point of this article is to hopefully spread the word on campus about how many millions of people are struggling every day in South Africa from AIDS. I am also hoping that this article will send the message that there are many ways to help… before it is too late. They need our help, and it is time for us to really pay attention to the more important issues what we can to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. According to Oprah.com, in an interview with former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, 70,000 babies are born with AIDS every single year. Millions of people are suffering with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and thousands of children are orphaned because of their parents die from AIDS. The children in South Africa are the majority of the population who are infected; it is the number one killer of children in South Africa. There are some major causes to the AIDS pandemic in South Africa. The main cause, which has been a problem not only in South Africa but also largely in the United States and other countries around the world, is ignorance. Too many people go throughout their lives being uneducated about AIDS. Many people do not know how it is contracted, the symptoms of it, and how easily it can be spread. Part of the problem is poverty and lack of funding in South Africa. A large portion of South Africa suffers from extreme poverty. Since the parts of South Africa that are most infected with HIV/AIDS are so poor, it is hard for the hospitals and schools to apply for funding and grants. Since there is hardly any funding, hospitals cannot afford to purchase the proper treatments for AIDS, and schools are unable to receive the proper materials to teach children about HIV/AIDS.There are so many ways that we can help these millions of South Africans suffering and dieing every day; ways that we can make a huge impact in the lives of the millions suffering in South Africa. The first and most convenient is often unrecognized by many shoppers and consumers is Product(Red). According to www.joinred.com/red, Product(Red) was started by Bono and Bobby Shriver to raise money for The Global fund, which funds countries that are facing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria crises. This is such a simple way to help save a life. The way it works is consumers purchase (red) products from the companies and corporations that are sponsoring Product(Red). These companies and corporations are Motorola, American Express, Gap, Emporio Armani, Converse, Apple, and Hallmark. A percentage of the profit made from each Product(Red) product gets transferred to The Global Fund. For every 50 cents that is raised, one treatment pill is purchased and given to a woman or child who is infected with HIV/AIDS. It’s that simple. Go to an Apple store, if you need an ipod, buy the red Nano. If you like Converse, buy a pair of converse from the Product(Red) collection. Think of how much power we have as consumers in the United States. We can save so many woman and children who are infected with HIV/AIDS in South Africa just by shopping for everyday items. Another organization raising money for HIV/AIDS victims in South Africa is by donating money to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, which was started in 1995 by former South African president Nelson Mandela. This fund raises money to be granted to South Africa’s children and youth who are in need of money. To donate money, log on to http://www.nmcf.co.za/Donate.aspx. These people desperately need our help. It is time for us as Americans living in one of the richest and most abundant countries in the world to start sharing our fortunes with those who need it most. Help stop the AIDS pandemic in South Africa.
