Welcome to another issue of the Skyline View, I hope you enjoy your stay here. If not that’s good too, because if you get upset with what we write it means that you are thinking for yourself.
These days people rely too much on the media as a crutch for their information, and so they don’t go out and do their own research. I’m not saying stop reading this paper and get your news by yourself, I am simply saying that this newspaper should be a launch pad for people to look deeper into something that interests them, especially when you read something that you don’t agree with.
I have received emails from people complaining about what I write, saying they don’t agree with it or they don’t like what I am talking about and think I am writing solely for the sake of ranting about something that pisses me off. Personally I love these types of emails, because I love getting under peoples skin and irritating them to the point of madness, because when I do this people get angry with me and begin to argue. When they argue with me I know what they are thinking, and it is something that I have been seeing less and less of outside of my circle of friends.
Debating is something that is done for a purpose; persuasion and it can in fact solve things simply because people are discussing it. It is in our nature to be argumentative and show dominance over another individual, whether it is physical strength or in this case mental prowess.
I know I am always looking for someone to argue with because I learn that way, and I am always interested in finding someone who can out-argue me, not to say that I am the best debater in the world. I just like to meet people who are “smarter” than me in one way or another so I can use them as a source of knowledge to tap, thus making me smarter in that subject area.
The sad fact of it is I hardly see that going on at Skyline, and it is disheartening, on a college campus there should be stimulating debate around campus about, current events, sports, music, class subject matter. Instead all around campus I hear the same old thing, talk of epic parties, the rims someone is planning to buy, who is hot and who isn’t and to be honest I am really disappointed. I had better discussions in high school.
Part of learning is wanting to do your own research and debate about it, read the newspaper and branch from there. Debate with friends once in a while, every now and then a healthy argument is good, and it’s not like you are directly attacking a person for their character you are just challenging their views. I don’t see that on this campus and I fear for our generation because of it. I do not want to live in a world of degenerates, we already do and we should make this world better not worse.
If this article makes me the most hated person on campus, then so be it, at least I know you are reading what I have to say, and hopefully it strikes a chord somewhere. And if you are really sore about it come talk to me and we will debate the subject. Until then I will just have to mourn our inevitable downfall.
