Smoking. It has been an issue that plagues not only these pages, but also the entire campus, way too often. Constantly smokers are subject to the ever-changing restrictions and rules applied to the campus’ smoking policy. Each semester it seems there are a handful of new restrictions, causing smokers to feel ostracized. Then after each of these changes, the only place that provides a medium for us to speak out, is this newspaper. We of the Skyline View feel that this needs to change, and the time for change is now.The smoking policy will once again be brought before the College Council for review on Wednesday, March 28. The council will hear two proposals at this meeting. One from Sheri Hancock, head of the Health and Safety Committee, concerning relocation of designated smoking areas due to finished construction, and the other from Ray Hernandez concerning Smoke Free San Mateo County. This meeting could be a great opportunity for the smoking community to let their voice be heard and to be a part of the planning stages of a revised smoking policy. Don’t let these changes be made without your input, for these changes most directly affect you, the smokers of Skyline College. We know that there are a lot of smokers on this campus; it is evident from the amount of cigarette butts left scattered on the ground. This is your chance to band together and make a difference for yourselves, instead of relying on a smoker on this newspaper staff to do the complaining for you. And this call to action goes not just to students, but also to the many smokers whom are a part of faculty and staff here at Skyline. If we all join in on this cause, there is no way that our opinions won’t be heard. This is a chance for faculty, staff and students to work together with the other policy makers to help create a better campus environment for all of us.Mark this meeting on your calendar, March 28, and help each other to make a brighter and more tolerant future for Skyline College.
