Community college isn’t just that in between stage after high school and before a four-year university anymore. For some people this is college and after their stay, which is typically longer than two years, they go into the job market or return to the job from whence they came. The point is however long a stay at a community college is and wherever people end up I am willing to bet that the majority of the students and former students of any community college will say their stay was un-enjoyable.
I have been at Skyline for two years but I have only been to Skyline so I am speaking solely about Skyline, which may make this editorial more or less scathing depending on how you look at it. Anyway I can safely say that my experience at Skyline has been pretty much unpleasant. I have had the privilege of learning from some very impressive teachers, and learned some new things, but the campus life here is appalling. Kids being home schooled have more fun.
One of my fellow journalists here once described Skyline as, “high school with ashtrays.” In a way she was right on the other hand I distinctly remember having more fun in high school, at least there were performances that weren’t meant to be academic, or fund raisers. High school had performances from bands or plays and performances from groups not associated with the school. I mean come on? Whatever happened to the talent show? It is free to put on and is something that most can enjoy.
Other colleges have concerts and shows all the time. What does Skyline have? Academic speakers and poetry readings. I have no problem with poetry readings but at the same time they get old. As do the same speakers that come here to speak out on the tragedy of the week. That is all well and good however, there are comedians out there looking for work and would jump to play at a packed theater.
Skyline does have movies played here all the time but again the subject matter is never one that is interesting to a massive amount of people. I love to see documentaries…in moderation, perhaps a few horror fests or comedy nights could be thrown in there too, or even silent film night. These are just a few ideas, and I am sure that if someone were to ask every single person for ten ways to make this school more interesting it could be done instantly.
I see colleges with ads about bands coming and playing, comedy tours hit colleges all the time and each time the shows sell out. Without question if this school presented something of true popular culture interest the house would be packed. Otherwise all we have to look forward to is another pancake breakfast at the beginning of the semester.
This campus has even more reason to entertain its student body, because us community college students need to forget sometimes that we are in a community college, that we have to go home each night to our own home be it with a our parents, our own child or spouse. We don’t have dorm life; we work life. We need more entertainment on campus.
I hate to point out the obvious but now we have two venues to show stuff, the theater that rarely gets used, and now the shining new building six, if that building is only used for food and student government so help me I will boycott its use until some sort of pop culture entertainment is supplied at the building, and if there is anyone that reads this column and is as unhappy with your stay here at Skyline, I recommend you do the same if not for us but the next generation of students that come here.
