Greetings! This is Mike Whitebear, and I’m here to inform faithful readers how to start a club at Skyline College. Starting a club might sound fun and easy, it isn’t. It’s kind of fun, but definitely not easy. There are several steps to go through before you can have fun in your very own club. I should know, since I tried to start a club to call my very own! In order to become a recognized organization or club, you must complete the following steps:
Compose Organization / Club Constitution– First, you have to form a club, with a club constitution. Basically, you have to lay out the skeleton of your club (what it does, who are the originators of the club, what you do, etc.) If you want to start a club, then you’ve got to know what you stand for.
Complete Organization / Club Roster (Minimum of 10 registered Skyline Students)- Next, get at least 10 students (including yourself) to be a part of the club. You and two other people is more like a small circle than a club.
Have your Advisor(s) fill out and sign the Advisor Contract(s)– Ooh, before I forget, you need a club advisor! Just because you’ve got a club doesn’t mean that the school is going to let you do whatever you want without a teacher/advisor present.
Complete Skyline Organization and Club Council (SOCC) Agenda Request Form
Complete a Trust Account Application Form
Submit forms to the Student Activities Office. The Student Activities Office will then forward the information to the Vice President of the ASSC. The VP will then phone the contact person and tell them the date and time of the next SOCC meeting.
– Once all the forms are completed, head to the student activities office, and hand them the forms. You could throw them, I suppose, but handing them over makes you look more professional. Once the student activities office has the forms, they will then forward all the info to the VP of the ASSC. Then your contact person will get contacted, and informed when and where the next SOCC meeting will happen.
Send at least one representative to the SOCC Meeting. The purpose of the club/organization will be discussed at the meeting, how it will serve the students at Skyline College and answer any additional questions put forth by the members of SOCC. SOCC will then vote on whether your club/organization meets the requirements to become a recognized club/orgination. Sounds spooky, doesn’t it? You’d better make a good case!Well, now that we know how to start a club, the next step is to actually get started on it. Tune in next time as we see how I fare in starting a club!
