As most of you know, being sick is no walk in the park. It’s not even a trip to the movies. Being sick is in fact no fun at all. As someone who was recently sick, I would know. While trying to keep one nostril from leaking fluids and trying to make the other nostril take in oxygen, I got to thinking, “Man, I remember when being sick was awesome.”
Come on, faithful reader! I know you remember those days back in elementary school when you would WISH that one morning, you would sneeze one too many times, or cough something icky up, so that when inspected by your parental units, they would decide that staying home is the best option. That’s when the fun would begin. You get to chill out in your room, playing with your toys, or playing SEGA Genesis, or other fun inside activities. The entire day was yours to command.
There were some speed bumps, of course. You would have to ingest that gross-tasting medicine, or worse: take a trip to the doctor’s office. Then the day would be ruined, since you’d get back home at the same time you would get home from school. But that’s a worst-case scenario. When we were kids, we didn’t think about those scenarios. We only thought about having fun.
Nowadays, when we get sick, it’s awful. We might get to stay home, sure, but it’s never really any fun. We ache, we cough, we leak many fluids; it’s a horrible experience all around. When I was sick, I kept asking myself, “why was this fun all those years ago?” To be honest, even with all the reasons above, I still couldn’t find a good enough reason. Maybe it was because I was sick…
So what is it I’m trying to say? Being sick was a blast about a decade ago, but now it’s not cool anymore. Thank goodness we have all these new medicinal discoveries that make us suffer in different ways than what we wanted to.
