The title “Flyboys” makes the movie sound so different from what it actually is. Some might think that it’s about a couple of guys who think they’re “fly.” Others may think that a couple of stupid kids got transformed into flies. Or maybe you’re one of the people who actually watched the television trailers, and pieced together that “Flyboys” is a WWI movie.”Flyboys” stars James Franco as Blaine Rawlings, a rancher who needs to escape his creditors. So how does he do it? Well, it just so happens that WWI has started. Can you think of a better reason to enlist in the French army than that one? I sure can’t. As Rawlings arrives in France, he meets up with some of his fellow troops, and is quickly trained to fly airplanes.I’m sure that this sounds somewhat exciting, but the flying and shooting doesn’t happen during the first 30-40 minutes of the movie. It gets pretty boring pretty quickly. Fortunately, when the action finally makes its appearance, it’s great. If it wasn’t so obvious that special effects were used, it’d look even more impressive. The planes are period accurate, as well as the glaring fact that black people weren’t allowed to fly in the U.S army. The one black pilot in the movie is pretty much a token. For some odd reason, the script writer felt it necessary to give Rawlings a love interest. Although I’m sure the idea sounded good on paper, it’s horrible on screen. Rawlings falls for a French woman who can’t speak a word of English, a fact that he discovers quickly. So when they meet for a second time, he carries a French-to-English dictionary with him. Every single scene with the two of them is horrible to watch, since the lack of onscreen chemistry was quite obvious. If you’re looking for a good movie to watch, don’t see “Flyboys.” The one token black pilot might make it through the movie, but that’s no guarantee that you will.
