Having a Learning Center with an open door to student’s needs has always been a comfort here on campus. We were free to access its resources as we pleased. We had computer labs and free tutoring in math, english, and science. However, due to a change in Title 5’s policy, students now have to enroll in a class in order to use The Learning Center’s facilities. Students must register for half a unit to three units in a Learning Skills course to generate funds, which support The Learning Center, instead of the state supporting it. We, the staff of The Skyline View, feel that the state should give support back to The Learning Center. But until then, the student body needs to help keep this important resource on campus. The Learning Center offers many different resources to help students with assignments. The computer labs are equipped with internet and word processing to assist students in research and essay writing. There are also tutors available in almost every subject. However, not every student can access these resources, at least not without being part of the course that uses TLC as a lab such as Learning Skills 800: Supervised Tutoring. Though half a unit does not relatively cost much, it is just another fee to add to students’ ever-rising list of costs. It seems that college students continue to be stiffed out of programs and resources. Why does the state keep cutting college funds? This question is posed in part with rhetoric. Whatever the reasons, when change comes, both the campus faculty and the student body have to roll with the punches. Students need to get out and show their support for the resources offered to them. The Learning Center is, and has been, very conductive in helping students succeed in college. Now we need to return the favor. Go out and register for half a unit to help keep TLC. The staff is working hard to offer as many programs specific to students’ needs as requested. TLC has always been open to students to help them succeed in school, now we need to help TLC stay open.Until the state goes back and revises Title 5, again, the student body needs to keep up the support of The Learning Center.
