Normally, when an R.V. comes rolling along while you’re on the highway, you have to hide your anger, since it’s kind of hard to see past those things. Or you may be like me, and you try and stifle the smile that creeps across your face since those things are so freaking huge. In either case, you’ll want this “R.V.” in your line of view, because it’s a great ride.
Robin Williams stars as Bob Munro, a man whose family is living quite nicely thanks to his job at a soda company. In fact, the Munro family is all set to go on a nice vacation to Hawaii. Bob, however, thinks that it’s time for a change of pace, so he goes and rents an R.V., and takes (or kidnaps, depending on your point of view) his family on a road trip to Colorado. The family is quick to voice their opposition, and the kids (played by Josh Hutcherson and Joanna “JoJo” Levesque) even dub the vehicle “The Rolling Turd.”
If this plot seems familiar, then you must’ve seen this movie’s predecessor, “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” Even though both movies are similar, “R.V.” still has its funny moments to call its own. Williams isn’t back to his old self in this movie, but some could say that it’s a good thing. He mixes comedy with some “family-man seriousness” very well, and seems sincere throughout the entirety of the film. Jeff Daniels costars as the head of a family of oddballs named the Gornickes, who keep running into the Munros during their trip, keeping the laughs coming. In fact, some of the funniest scenes of the film involve Daniels, making it safe to say that his character makes the film work.
All in all, “R.V.” is a great film that will keep you entertained, if only for about an hour and a half. Just make sure that you keep some earplugs handy when the Gornickes start singing.
