In the Student Services Center on the second floor of Building 2 lies a sanctuary for any Skyline student enrolled with 6 or more units. Although hidden from plain view, the Health Center provides a myriad of services. We at the Skyline View deliver this editorial in hopes to endorse the many benefits our college’s Health Center has to offer.
The Health Center provides on-campus services regarding overall health and well-being. With life being unpredictable of any misfortunes, the center approximates servicing from 25-30 students during daytime hours of operation. Drop-in situations are encouraged for an evaluation of symptoms by the center’s nurse, which can then be referred to designated locations accordingly. In addition, other general services are available, including blood pressure checks and tests for hearing, TB, HIV, and pregnancy – all for the sexy cost of $0.
The Health Center also holds special events, including a $20 eye examination offered in both Spring and Fall semesters each year. Provided by an Optomology service in San Mateo, the $20 fee consists of a refractive and comprehensive eye exam, a service usually ranging around $100.00 in other optometry offices. To take advantage of the next upcoming eye exams this Fall, keep an eye out for postings of special events on bulletin boards located in the stairwells of Building 2.
Moreover, the center offers a multitude of free treatments and information regarding general health. Is a headache hindering you from attending your next class? Stop by for aspirin, Tylenol, or other over the counter remedies available. For those opting to acquire condoms in a more discreet manner, students cannot only obtain free condoms, but personal lubricant as well. And with an abundant collection of pamphlets covering topics from allergies to tattoo removal, the Health Center is enabled to assess and treat any minor, yet worrisome symptom for all students at no cost.
Other than physical treatments, the Health Center is also concerned with the mental wellbeing of students. Anyone experiencing a mental crisis can set up an appointment with personal counseling services through the Health Center’s main desk. Guidance brochures and booklets are also on hand, and cover many difficult issues including depression, addictions, abuse, and suicide. Those unwilling to physically request help can also make appointments via phone, or by logging on to the Health Center’s website to undergo a mental screening in the privacy of your home. By the way, you may find it comforting to know that all information given to the Health Center and services provided by the College Nurse are strictly confidential.
Being students ourselves, we understand the tribulations involved throughout college experience. We all undergo difficult times, which is why we encourage everyone to take advantage of the services available. After all, for $26 per unit along with a health fee, you deserve the benefits.
