When you think of the Olympics, what sports usually come to mind? Maybe figure skating, the hammer throw, or the triple jump? But what about skateboarding? Yes, that’s right, skateboarding. In 2008, skateboarding and BMX will be official Olympic events. And personally, I’m looking forward to seeing them.
For those of you wondering why someone would allow this, I’m here to tell you that you need to get with the times. Skateboarding and BMX are very popular, as the riders participating in multiple events every year can tell you. Every year, the X Games (a sort of Olympics for the “extreme” sports), provide top-notch entertainment with the best in each event’s category. Professionals in skateboarding would include Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Andy McDonald, and Bucky Lasek. In the BMX category, some professionals include “Miracle Man” Dave Mirra, Mat Hoffman, Ryan Nyquist, and Jamie Bestwick. These guys are always prepared to ride during the X Games, as they are true competitors in their respective fields. If you’ve ever watched them, you’ll know they’re the real deal, and not to doubt their abilities.
So the question arises, “Who will represent the US?” That’s a great question, unfortunately, one of which no one knows the answer just yet. Personally, I don’t care who it is. I’m just happy that these two sports are represented on what could be considered the world’s biggest stage.
