Former Skyline College student Justin Mendoza, 21, of Daly City, died after being fatally shot during the early morning hours of Monday March 21 in San Francisco. Five others also sustained gunshot wounds in the incident, which took place near the intersection of 19th and Indiana streets in the Potrero District.
Inspector Timothy Dempsey of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) said police are working on various theories about the shootings and will not commit to one at this time, and they don’t know of any conflicts involving the victims and shooter that preceded this crime.
According to police, it was just a typical night out, not a private party event, where people were out enjoying life and a few “bad apples” were on the scene.
“We have information that’s advancing the case,” Dempsey said. “The investigation is by no means stalled.”
However police are seeking information from anyone who knows anything, Dempsey said.
Police are also looking for information on the vehicle used by the shooter. They described it as a silver vintage 4-door Land Rover, late-1990s to early-2000s model, with a black grill/brush guard over the headlights. The driver was described as possibly an Asian male in his 20s, 5 feet 8-9 inches tall and of medium build.
While police did not comment further on the shooter, Dempsey does not believe the victims have gang ties.
SFPD tip lines are: (415) 553-9578 or (415) 553-1305. Police encourage anyone who has information to please come forward. Police say they are willing to treat people anonymously.
