Regarding Michael Menaster’s piece in the Dec. 6 issue concerning campus security, Skyline College is a safe campus. It is in the top five colleges in the Bay Area in terms of safety, according to the National Crime Statistics. We are committed to preserving this excellent record. Here is a review of campus security services:
At least one security office staff member is on duty Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Security officers are also patrolling the campus throughout the day (including Saturdays) and evening-before, during and after class hours.
Campus telephones are located in all classroom buildings on campus. They are checked regularly by the security office to ensure that they work.
The security office telephone number is clearly posted on the wall above each telephone. The Security cell phone number is also posted in the event students do not reach a person at the extension.
The security department offers to escort students, faculty and staff to their cars or the bus stops upon request. Request for an officer escort can be made any time the college is open by contacting the security office.
Voice mail is available if the security office telephone is not answered after six rings. Staff returns telephone messages with ten minutes after receiving a message.
Walkie-talkie units and college cell phones are located in all buildings in division offices and department offices. Contact is immediate from the department to security via the walkie-talkies or cells, and response time is generally five minutes or less.
If students have any additional questions or concerns about safety on campus, they can contact the security office located in duilding 2, room 2319, or phone 650-738-4199.
