The last time the Trojans celebrated a Coast Conference championship was 25 years ago in 1979. Now, they can start that process again as they won the championship from a six- run scare in the ninth inning by the College of San Mateo (CSM), narrowly winning 11-10 on May 6.Entering the ninth inning with a healthy 11-4 lead, the Trojans (28-6, 20-4) were three outs away from celebrating. Those three outs would not come without a fight by the Bulldogs (28-6, 19-5) as they got four hits and two Trojan errors to give CSM six runs, cutting their deficit to one run, 11-10, threatening to take the lead with one on base and two outs. Head coach Dino Nomicos called up the Trojans third pitcher of the day, Jon Kimball, to get the final out. Kimball walked the first batter he faced, thereby giving CSM two runners on base. The following batter Kimball faced, however, flied out to right fielder Brandon Ramsey and the celebration began as the Trojan players stormed the pitchers mound. This year’s team also set the school record for most victories in a single season with 28 under their belt.”We somehow lost our focus and started making some really costly mistakes,” said Nomicos. “We are really lucky to have pulled this one off.”The Trojans were down early in the game as CSM got on the scoreboard in the first inning by scoring two runs and going up 2-0. Skyline responded with two runs of their own, as Aaron Davis hit a two-RBI double to tie the game at two apiece. CSM tacked on one run in the third inning, going up 3-2. Trojan slugger Steve Dorst put Skyline ahead in the fourth inning as he belted a two-run homerun, giving the Trojans a 4-3 lead. To start the fifth, Skyline got the first two batters on base and then CSM intentionally walked Dan Hernandez, setting up a bases-loaded situation for Dorst. He hit a grand slam over the left field fence giving his team a 9-3 advantage and his second homerun of the game.”I knew I had to have a big game today,” Dorst said. “My teammates were trying to hype me up because they knew what this game meant.”Skyline starting pitcher Al Orozco pitched five full innings before being relieved by closer Nick Bogdanoff, who would only give up one run in the seventh inning. With a 28-6 record, the Trojans are seeded number 4 in the Northern California Community College Baseball playoffs and will host a playoff game against Shasta College, who finished third in the Golden Valley Conference, May 15. Shasta College is seeded number 13 with a record of 21-15.The Knights are lead by three players: sophomore outfielder Jordan Prado, who has a .397 batting average with 25 RBI’s and has a .504 slugging percentage; sophomore infielder Ryan Gipson, who is batting .370 wit 26 RBI’s and 14 stolen bases; and freshman pitcher Mike Miller who has a record of 7-4 with a 3.99 earned run average, 54 strikeouts, and 78.3 innings pitched.Skyline comes into the playoffs with key players of their own, like Pre-Season All American Will Vogl, who has a .475 batting average, 13 homeruns, 53 RBI’s and a .993 slugging percentage; sophomore right fielder Brandon Ramsey with a .423 batting average, 32 RBI’s and a .657 slugging percentage; starting pitching with Al Orozco with a 7-1 record 2.33 earned run average and 80 strikeouts; and Jon Kimball, 5-2 with a 1.95 earned run average.Shasta will enter the playoffs against Skyline, who has 15-2 home record, so the Knights will have their work cut out for them.
