Since Nov. 3, Skyline’s learning center has been cracking down on a few new policies. These policies include: requiring either a student ID or a library card for computer use, asking for paper before printing, minimal web access, and using only an assigned computer.
We at The Skyline View feel that some of these policies are being enforced causes confusion and hinders students’ ability to access campus utilities. We also feel the students are at fault for forcing the administration to take action in this way.
Those students who went into the learning center to do everything but homework, including looking at pornography, listening to music, and printing out dozens of non-course related work are making the rest of us suffer by forcing the learning center coordinators to enforce stricter rules and regulations.
Here’s what one might expect now: students have to leave their ID card at the front desk in order to be assigned a computer and then proceed to hunt that computer down.
A lot of students don’t have a student ID or a library card. In addition, due to students’ stupidity of looking at inappropriate content on learning center computers, there are new restrictions on websites giving us less access to potentially important or helpful content. What if some students don’t have any other Internet access?
However with these new policies working in the learning center is much more quiet, which makes it easier to get things done.
But when it comes time to print something out, good luck. The printing situation is most inconvenient. Before printing anything, you have to ask for paper, put the paper in the printer, then go to your computer and click print. Sounds easy enough, but while you are walking back to your computer to print out your work someone else will undoubtedly click print, and force you to have to get more paper. All this causes is confusion.
We understand that some of these policies have to be enforced for the greater good of the learning center. However, our concern is that these policies cause disorder as well as restriction.
Here are a few suggestions we at The Skyline View would like to make in regards to the printing situation:
1.Set up a designated printing station of three to four computers in order to maintain control among those who are printing.
2. Create an authorization code for each computer in the learning center. When a student is ready to print a TLC assistant has to enter the code
3. Have one computer connected to a printer with an assistant at that computer regulating and monitoring what is being printed.
It’s good that the learning center is trying to enforce some regulation, and we commend those who work there for keeping our work environment quiet. As far as the other policies though, come on people. We’re in college. We’re all adults. We should all be responsible enough to follow the rules, and prevent coordinators from having to enforce these kinds of rules upon us.
