Every Spring our college holds elections for the Associated Students Of Skyline College.Due to lack of promotion of the ASSC, most students are unaware of these elections. This limits the number of candidates as well as voters in the year’s elections.
It is the responsibility of the ASSC to promote themselves. Students need to be aware that there is a student government on campus. The ASSC represents the Skyline student, therefore it is ASSC’s responsibility to inform students of their existence.
The ASSC plays an important role to the students at Skyline College. Some of the workload that our student government takes on are: planning activities, adopting and supervising the ASSC budget, participating in college committees and sharing in the development of college and district policies. The ASSC is also a representative of the Skyline student body.
Every student on campus should be aware of their student government. Unfortunately this isn’t the case here at Skyline. Students are not voting or running for office due to the lack of promotion of the student government. And because of this, people elected into office aren’t there because they deserve to be, it’s because hardly anyone votes.
This is a problem when elections roll around in the Spring. The ASSC needs students to run for office and to vote these candidates into office. But because many students aren’t aware of the ASSC’s existence, they neither run nor vote.
Promotion will provide the ASSC the tools they need to get students attention. The more promoting the ASSC does then the more people will run for office, and the more competitive the elections become. Promotion will also encourage people to vote. And the more people vote, the better the representation of the student body and government.
When more students run for office, then the competition allows them to gain experience in an area they may not be familiar with. This will give them an advantage for a real world setting and allow them to get a feel for politics. It will also allow them to use different strategies on how to get a job done or how to achieve a certain goal.
The more students who vote, then that increases the odds of someone being elected that deserves the title they run for. These candidates are students who represent the student body making it important for students to vote.
These elections are very important to the student body. The people who are elected as our student governed officials have control over money that is charged to every student as a student body fee. If students are spending money on a fund that they are paying into, then they should take an initiative to get involved in their student government.
The Skyline View feels that with more promotion by the ASSC, then more students will be aware of their student government. This may encourage people to get involved with the student government by either running for office or even more importantly voting.
Now, we understand that promoting for the ASSC won’t be easy and it will take time and effort. However we also feel that the more students are aware of their student government then the better the system may become.
Go out and vote between April 28 through May 2! Remember that you do not have to vote for the person on the ballot, you can elect someone through write in votes.
