Skyline College holds many events each semesters aiming at students as well as teachers. These events are for students and staff to become more aware of issues concerning the school, the community and the world.
If you have recently been to any seminars, forums, conferences, etc., then you might have noticed one thing missing: an audience.
It’s been debated as to whether or not these events are being promoted properly. Much of the knowledge about such events are spread by word of mouth.
Currently, flyers and mini posters are posted around campus n walls and small bulletin boards informing the staff and students of these events. Although these flyers and mini posters are up, it does not mean that people notice them well enough to feel inclined to attend any particular event.
We at The Skyline View feel that the promotion for seminars, forums, conferences, health testing, etc., not being properly promoted.
No one is showing up at these events because they are not aware of them happening. We suggest a few things the promoters of these events should do in order attract a larger audience:
1. Make the posters into banners: if a student is walking by a banner, they are not going to miss it.
2. Make the posters more colorful: the brighter something is, the easier it will be to catch one’s eye.
3. Tell teachers to announce certain events in their classrooms, or suggest they offer extra credit for attending the events. Students are always looking for ways to raise their grades, etc..
4. Schedule the seminars, conferences, health testing, and workshops, etc. at times that may better suit a student’s schedule.
5. Round up some volunteers to hand out flyers to students around campus. It wouldn’t hurt to pass out a piece of paper informing students of an event.
6. If you can’t round up enough students, you can always put flyers on students cars. This is a great way to promote anything.
The Skyline View understands however that promotions can be difficult as well as expensive. Having flyers made isn’t cheap these days, and with the budget cuts, it might even be next to impossible.
However, no one said they had to be beautiful, you could make photocopies of one flyer and hand those out. These events are important for as many people to attend as possible because they really are for the greater good of the students.
Without proper promotion, important events will cease to take place here at Skyline College, which would be a real shame.
