Jhene Aiko’s intimate lyrics can send anyone’s emotions through a whirlwind. Her sound seems like a personal message to you, yet her lyrics can be a knife through a man’s heart.

She has had a great year, but nothing can compare to the great success that this sultry R&B; singer will have. After giving her fans a taste of her talent in her 2011 mix-tape “Sailing Soul,” and now with her 2014 major debut album “Souled Out,”which is her first full length album.

The 12 song set comes in quite a varied fashion, ranging from heart felt to emotionless. If you purchase the deluxe version of the album you’ll get two bonus songs, “Remember” and “Blue Dream”. But if you buy the deluxe version from Target you’ll also get two more songs: “You vs them” and “Beautiful Ruin” which is a total of four great songs.

When you think of Aiko’s voice you can’t help but compare her to the likes of Sade with her smooth, and jazzy flow. All of her albums do have a certain theme going for them as far as what it means to “sail your soul.” Aiko has stated that when she meets with producers she doesn’t sell her self but she “sails” herself, meaning she sticks to the ideas of spiritual preservation, You can see this throughout her music and interviews and that’s what makes her such a talented young artist.

One of the major differences that you will see in this full length album in comparison to her previous is the lack of other artists. Many people felt that with Aikos taking this direction with her latest album it could take her away from a larger audience, since she didn’t have any big name artists on the album. But I feel that she has done the right thing by choosing this direction. I believe that it will really have a chance to set her apart from everyone and prove that she has what it takes to make it in this industry.

The album starts off with a great track called “Limbo,” and this song is a clear picture of what Aiko is really like. It talks about how she is ready for the ride this new path will take her on.

One of the great qualities that Aiko shares on this album is her willingness to be open about all of all of her emotions. Her songs aren’t just a pile of useless words mixed with some good beats. Her music and emotions are something that everyone can relate to on some degree. The second track on the album, entitled “W.A.Y.S,” (Why aren’t you smiling) was for her brother who she lost to cancer in 2012. The lyrics in this song truly resonates her feelings.

I could honestly go on and on about the tracks in the album, but that wont give you a chance to go and listen to it. Overall I would give this album two big thumbs up.
