Rapper The Game took a very different route leading up to the release of his fifth album “Jesus Piece”. As opposed to his other albums, there was no major marketing campaign or number one single
on the Billboard charts. The promotion seemed to be more of a word of mouth tactic. This actually made the album much easier to listen to.
The overall tone of the album is much heavier compared to his previous four albums. Throughout, he mentions his religious beliefs as well as his own outlook towards the future. It shows that Game has grown exponentially as an artist. He is discussing much more serious topics, as well as much more personal ones. Fans seem to resonate better with personal stories in music.
The Game has always been a strong lyricist, and that doesn’t falter with this album. While he won’t give you the best lyrics you’ve ever heard, his delivery on each song makes you want to pay
attention to what he is saying throughout. Surprisingly, “Jesus Piece” has a lot of features from other artist- almost too many. Having too many artists on one song takes away from what the artist is trying to deliver. For example, the song “All That (Lady)” features four other artists. That’s just unnecessary. To hear that many voices on one song makes it sound cloudy. I would have much rather heard one artist featured on one song, just so that there isn’t so much variety.
The production is what makes the album. My personal favorite, “Ali Bomaye”, has a very triumphant feel to it. Featuring quality verses from 2 Chainz and Rick Ross, Game is able to deliver a
great song and acts as a great gateway to the rest of the album. Another favorite of mine, “Can’t Get Right”, is hands down the most personal song on the album. He tells numerous stories concerning his personal life and his career as well. Game has never had a problem holding back his emotions, and this song is a perfect example of that.
Overall, “Jesus Piece” is another great album from one of the most consistent rappers today. From the subtle religious message to the good overall production, I was thoroughly surprised with the
quality product Game was able to produce. I recommend this album for any fan of The Game’s music or fans of hip hop music.
