I know some people believe that the new trilogy does not live up to the original. But I have to say with a thunderous shout that, “You’re WRONG!”
The new trilogy rocks and is the perfect supplement to the first three films released back in 1977, 1980, and 1983. These “new” films, set to come out in 1999, 2002, and 2005, respectively, are the necessary chapters to tell the full story.
And I think that they are doing just that. While it may be poorly edited and full of faults, I still love it. It’s that inexplicable draw that I feel to the saga despite it all.
The first three released films had the same problems that are plaguing the new three. So what is the big complaint about? I will tell you one problem that I think people are having with the new trilogy that they do not seem to have with the first three.
The truth being that everyone is older and more cynical than before. George Lucas and his celebrated series have not changed with the times. They have always been the same saccharine, epic, heroic, and mythic films.
But because it has not changed with the times, it has been blast with such tactless remarks like kiddy, stupid, boring, or overblown. The thing that gets to me is that it is all those things, and that is the way it’s supposed to be.
Something you loved as a child can never affect you the same way when you are an embittered adult. Since I, personally, am never going to grow up, I can still appreciate the series for what it is.
A gripping, poorly written and poorly acted story full of wonderful actors doing their worst job possible while acting to thin air, blue, or even green screen. Before it may have been all matte paintings, but is it really that much worse to exchange matte for computer animation?
I believe that if you loved the original trilogy and find yourself not genuinely enjoying the new films, you should try harder to turn off the “grown up” within and kick your inner child all the way up to eleven.
You might be surprised to find that you can really get into the epic saga of a galaxy of long ago that happens to be far, far away.
