The “Gamergate” debacle

Conflicts happen all the time. Sometimes a side will have a noble cause. Sometimes both sides have varying opinions on one subject. Regardless of the issue, when the conflict is being “resolved” both sides should be as respectful possible.

An ongoing example of a conflict that could be handled in a better fashion would be the “Gamergate” conflict. Essentially after a recent scandal, Gamers have started to question the relationship between Video game journalists and game developers. “Gamergate” has developed into something more than just that one problem, but for the sake of this argument let us leave it at that.

The whole debacle started out in a seemingly orderly fashion, gamers had questioned and called for actions against something they had seen and thought was wrong. But very soon after things became complicated, and it seems that there was a loss of perspective. Instead of the two sides coming together and addressing the issue like civilized human beings, accusations and death threats started to roll out. Nothing has been achieved, nothing gained.

While it completely makes sense that the internet is a wild and uncontrollable place, and it may be completely impossible to control what people say. The execution and manner of how the main parties involved are handling this situation is atrocious. This could have led to some great changes in gaming journalism and within the gaming community, but the way things are going at the moment, it seems no great change will come.
