Editorial – Skyline stay strong

In light of the recent tragedies that took place at this year’s Boston Marathon, people have lost their peace of mind, fearing the new dangers that may lie just outside their front door. We now live in a time where people are afraid of taking part in otherwise joyous activities for fear of the potentially serious risks.

Although the Boston bombings took place on the other side of the country, the Skyline community has shared in the heightened anxiety that Boston citizens are now experiencing. Fear is an appropriate response. However, it’s important to remember that in order to move ahead, we must understand that we can’t let the fear consume us.

One aim for terrorism is to inflict terror upon it’s targeted civilians. We can learn to prepare for this breed of danger, but let’s not allow them the satisfaction of crippling the American spirit.

Public venues throughout the area have responded to all of these recent dangers by taking the necessary precautions. They’ve increased security by implementing thorough bag checks and, when appropriate, body scans. Although this increase in security can be a direct reminder of a possible threat, we must carry on and remember that safety and freedom are never guaranteed. Don’t let this tragedy diminish the American experience.

For every threat of attack, lock-down, or “suspicious package” found on campus, remember to maintain composure. We believe ourselves to be a resilient society that is capable of carrying on, now it’s time for us to prove it.
