From Nov. 1-5, Skyline held a drive to collect goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Mateo.
The Associated Students of Skyline sponsored the weeklong event held annually during November. Skyline club members and students were encouraged to bring in canned goods and other non-perishables for the weeklong food drive. For any students who wanted to participate but forgot to bring anything, the ASSC purchased goods for students to donate to the club of their choice. By the week’s end, the remaining unsold food was donated to the charity along with all the revenue earned from the sale of food.
“The event itself is actually growing in regards to the amount of food that we collect and donate,” said ASSC president Raymond Parenti- Kurttila. “It gets progressively better every time we do it.”
By the end of the event $867 were collected by the clubs. Surgical Technology, Phi Theta Kappa, and Skyline Cheer and Dance Clubs were the top three fundraising clubs, respectively. Although the top three groups who raise the most donations are rewarded, clubs were more interested in being involved.
” I t ‘s n i c e to help people, even if we don’t win,” said Ceramics Club Treasurer Jeanette Borgo. The aforementioned club encouraged its nearly 40 members to participate by cleaning out their pantries or buying extras to donate.
First time participants, the Surgical Technology Club, were the clear winners of the drive. The club managed to gather boxes full of donations.
“[We were] pleasantly surprised at how much people wanted to contribute,” said Lena Warren, the Surgical Technology Club’s enthusiastic secretary.
The Administration of Justice, American Medical Student Association, Black Student Union, Filipino Student Union, Gay Straight Alliance, Honors Transfer Program, and TRIO also helped fill 16 barrels.
