Coaching change for Raiders

After 10 straight regular season losses, the 0-4 Oakland Raiders fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday. Allen’s record ends with the Raiders at 8-28.

On Tuesday the Raiders announced the promotion of offensive line coach Tony Sparano to interim head coach. According to ESPN.com Sparano said that he feels the Raiders need a “philosophy” change, but had not explained what that philosophy might be.

According to Raiders.com quarterback David Carr had this to say about Allen’s firing, “A good man lost his job, obviously, and everyone has to take responsibility for that. Not just him [Dennis Allen]. We needed to play better because he’s a good coach. Again, he’s going to have a great job when that time comes, but again, now we have to move forward and I’m in full support of Coach Sparano and I look forward to playing under him now.”

General manager Reggie McKenzie must now find a viable replacement while battling concerns about his own job. Owner Mark Davis hasn’t shown any indication that he will fire McKenzie, but has stated that if the losing continues, he’s not making any promises.

It didn’t take long for sports media to start speculating on when former Raider head coach Jon Gruden will return to Oakland. USA Today Sports already dedicated an entire article on reasons why Gruden would return. Gruden became the second-most trending topic on Facebook shortly after Allen was fired.

New interim head coach Sparano will have a couple weeks to prepare for the division rival San Diego Chargers on Oct. 12 at the Oakland Coliseum
