Letter to the editor – back to Skyline

To the editor,

It is a thrill being back at Skyline in a student capacity.

During the 40 plus years since I last sat at a desk in building 8 you have grown so much and what a marvelous story you tell! Lots of things have changed and the new buildings and the gorgeous landscaping and the many course offerings, my, how I wish I were 19 all over again. Those 1970 prices for books and tuition would have fit well into my retirement income.

There is something on campus that absolutely catches my breath and which you should all know about. It is your MANNERS. ABSOLUTELY WOW in every meaning of the word! When I was a kid, Harry Truman was President, and my mother taught us to be polite and to hold doors open and to let the elderly sit down. On my first day, and every day since, it has been like I am hit in the face by a 30-foot wave of kindness. I have not had to open one door yet after two weeks on campus. You are refreshingly marvelous!

Every coin does have two sides though and this probably skips your attention. A bustling Skyline is no different in that respect. Do you ever hold onto the stair railings when moving between classes? The undersides are resplendent with used gum. Oldies like me are reminded of former classmates and their progeny and their gum but that is a memory we can do without.

It is great being back and I am stuck on you!
