Almost everyone is concerned with how they look. Most commonly, college students worry about their weight or body shape. We could ask our closest friends for advice, or buy that miracle machine that’s supposed to melt all that fat away.
Not so fast. What about taking a physical education class? The sad thing is that instructors might be trying to play on our insecurities to join a class. Flyers for physical education classes around campus seem to be geared towards weight loss.
Even the dance classes are influenced by the student obsession with looking slim. It appears that the physical education classes are not posting general information about the class, but how great the course is for looking better.
“Have killer legs” and “Lose weight” were some of the slogans I spotted on the flyers. Sure these classes are supposed to help you get physically conditioned, but there is a line between that and flat out saying you will look better.
I am taking a dance class here at Skyline College and the instructor’s description of the class bothers me. Sure, what they are saying appeals to many people and gets them to join the class, but it builds false hopes for the student.
The space used up to talk about how it could beautify you could be used to better explain the class and give students a better idea of what the class actually involves. It’s also wrong to take a good class for the wrong reason.
Next time you pass by these class posters or see their class information, take a second look and see how it is easy to make false promises that attract the vanity in you.
Be aware that even though you see those pretty, skinny people in the magazines, every body has a different shape that most of us will never be. So don’t give in to all the physical ideology and be happy.
