Networking events for job seekers

Skyline’s Career Center hosts its bi-annual Job & Internship Community Fair on the same day San Mateo County hosts its 10th annual Job Hunters Boot Camp Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. Both promise to have dozens of employers to bring to the San Mateo County community who are looking to hire and take applicants.

Skyline’s Fall Job Fair will be starting at 9:30 a.m. in the building six cafeteria, and will go until 1:00 p.m. They have committed at least 30 local employers from San Bruno, Daly City, and San Francisco who will be
attending in different job fields.

“Ours works well for the students and such because it’s here on campus, it’s in the dinning hall,” Alexander Jones of the Career Center said. “If they can check out both, definitely, it’s a great way to open up their network If they got the time and transportation.”

Jones suggests bringing your resumes with you and if you need help with making one the Career Center can help you with that. In addition, if one cannot attend the event, Jones invites you to “drop by the Career Center, as they keep in touch with the employers who attend the event.”

Skyline has been hosting job fairs since 1986 bi-annually in the spring and in the fall. The fall invites employers on campus while the one held in the spring is accompanied by workshops.

The 10th annual Job Fair Boot Camp will be held at the San Mateo County Event Center to bring employers and job seekers together, as well as provide workshops to help boost the morale of applicants.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier in conjunction with Assembly Member Kevin Mullin and the San Mateo County Workforce Investment Board will be sponsoring the event held at the Fiesta Hall located at 1346 Saratoga Drive in San Mateo from 10 a.m until 2 p.m.

“We have over 50 employers who are going to come, and they come from all different kinds of areas such as software and security,” spokesperson for Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s office said. Everyone from Allied Bart and Security Services to U.S. Postal service, both major employers, plan to be there. “And more are still signing up.”

In addition to the job fair, there will be several workshops to help educate job seekers on how to go about their search and the interviewing process, but also to build their self- esteem.

“It’s a combination of a job fair and workshops. We want to help people find employment, but we also want to help them feel better about their situation; boost their morale. The workshops really are to prop people up and say don’t give up,” spokesperson for Congresswoman Jackie Speier’s office said.

Some workshops to look forward to: “How to ace your interview,” “The ten most common mistake you make in your job search,” and another about overcoming adversity. All workshops are under an hour long.

“It’s a great variety of people, and most people after they attend leave feeling better about themselves, and with a smile. A lot of them actually get jobs as a result of attending the event,” spokesperson for Congresswoman Jackie Speiers office said.
