Editor -- In your piece "Hours buy a dollar with new English rules" in the 9/27 issue of the View, Catherine Lopes accuses "shameless politicians" of totally destroying student morale with these new English rules. With some additional research, your writer would have learned that these hours were added by the English Department at Skyline and have nothing to do with Sacramento politics. Also, students should be made aware that these hours do not impact in any way on the fees they pay for English classes.
Before a reporter chooses to assail the government and the educational system at Skyline, he/she owes it to the readers and the journalism profession to do the kind of research and interviewing that would minimize the possibility that such gross factual errors would be published.
Raising questions about the purpose of hours by arrangement and their impact on students is perfectly legitimate. The View's treatment of the issue was not.
