At the Coast Conference women's badminton tournament at Skyline ,held on May 8, four Trojan ladies won round one singles matches. Jennifer Wong defeated City College's Selina Chan, 11-3 and 11-4 in a play-in game. Stephanie Cheung beat Thao Doan of City College 11-0 and 11-1.
In today's day and age, a lot of athletes are getting bigger and stronger, especially in football, basketball, and baseball. In baseball, there has been a lot of talk about BALCO, a Bay Area based clinic that supplies muscle-enhancing drugs, like steroids to be used by certain players.
The Skyline women's badminton team hosted the Coast Conference Championships on May 8. They ended the season with an unblemished record of 6-0 in conference play. In their last regular season match, Skyline beat Mission College of Santa Clara 18-3. Along the perfect conference season, the Trojans defeated City College of San Francisco, Fresno City College, and Mission College via sweeps.
Skyline English professor and poet, Katharine Harer, Known to many as "Miss H," has completed a manuscript for a book entitled, "Comets, Blue Sox, Peaches, Chicks: Voices of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, 1943-1954." The book, an oral history of the only successful Women's Baseball League started by Phillip Wrigley, gives first-hand accounts from the players themselves, who are now in their 70s and 80s.
The last time the Trojans celebrated a Coast Conference championship was 25 years ago in 1979. Now, they can start that process again as they won the championship from a six- run scare in the ninth inning by the College of San Mateo (CSM), narrowly winning 11-10 on May 6.
